For sites that don't use Google Tag Manager.
Where the scripts go
Add both scripts to the <head> section of
every page of your website:
- The starter script first, as near the top of
<head>as possible. - The tracking script after it.
If your site uses a shared template or layout file for the
<head>, add them there once.
If your site has a cookie banner
The tracking script must only load after the visitor accepts analytics cookies. Cookie banner tools have their own way of doing this, usually by marking a script as belonging to the "analytics" or "statistics" category. Ask your cookie banner provider how to load a script only after analytics consent, and apply that to the tracking script only. If the starter script waited for consent too, it couldn't do its job; whether to run it before consent is your decision under your own privacy policy.
If your site has no cookie banner
Put both scripts directly in <head>. The tracking
script will run on every page view.
What direct installs can't do
Two booking setups record the booking on the booking system's own pages, using your Google Tag Manager container. They need Google Tag Manager:
- OpenTable bookings made through plain links to opentable.com;
- SevenRooms bookings.
If you use one of these without Google Tag Manager, talk to Distil.
