Tracking: Testing your setup

  • Updated

A checklist to run before and after you publish.

Open Google Chrome's developer tools (F12 on Windows, Cmd+Option+I on Mac), go to the Network tab, tick Preserve log, and filter for tf.distil.ai. For booking checks, do this in the tab where the booking is completed, before you complete it. Make real test bookings where asked, and cancel them afterwards.

To test as a new visitor, go to Application → Storage, click Clear site data, and reload. This works in GTM Preview too.

Before publishing

Use Google Tag Manager's Preview mode, or a staging copy of your site for direct installs.

Check Do this Pass if
Basic tracking Open your site, accept cookies if asked, and browse two pages A request to tf.distil.ai for each page
Own booking form Make a booking through your form One request containing "Value":"book-reservation", numbers without quote marks

After publishing

OpenTable's and SevenRooms' booking pages load your published container, not Preview, so booking checks run on the live site.

Check Do this Pass if
OpenTable widget, button or embedded page Make a booking Exactly one request containing "Value":"book-reservation", sent from your page. If there's a second one, check the otstatic.com condition, and that no extra tag is sending bookings.
OpenTable links Click the link, then book OpenTable's address contains daid= and dref=. One booking request from the OpenTable tab
SevenRooms Book on SevenRooms One booking request with a ReferenceCode, on the confirmation page
Live tracking Repeat the basic check on the live site As before

If tracking stops after publishing, publish the previous container version straight away (Versions → previous version → ⋯ → Publish), then contact Distil.
